What Is Orthodontic Headgear?
Orthodontic headgear is a device that uses pressure to correct bad bites and help guide proper growth and development of the face and jaws. We typically use protraction face masks/reverse headgear to treat anterior crossbites or underbites, which may result from the following:
- Dental Crossbite: An unusual eruption pattern of one or all of the anterior (front) teeth.
- Skeletal Crossbite: A Class III skeletal tendency where the upper jaw is underdeveloped, the lower jaw is overdeveloped, or a combination of both.
Your child will not need to wear headgear during the day. It is placed after dinner and worn overnight, making it less intrusive during the waking hours. This helps reduce concerns about the psychosocial effects of wearing headgear in public.
The Importance of Early Treatment
While anterior crossbites can be addressed later, we highly advise against delaying treatment. Early intervention leverages growth and helps establish a more favorable relationship between the upper and lower jaws, particularly in cases of skeletal crossbites. In many cases, using headgear can reduce or even eliminate the need for future orthognathic surgery.
Early correction of anterior crossbites also removes dental interferences, allowing for normal jaw development. This helps prevent damage to the gums and bone around the affected teeth, which, if not addressed, can lead to future tooth loss. Moreover, early treatment can reduce or avoid potential TMJ symptoms often seen in patients with crossbites.
What Is the Headgear Treatment Process?
The orthodontic headgear process begins with a comprehensive evaluation, during which Dr. Callahan will determine the nature of your child’s crossbite and the most effective treatment approach. A scan or impression will be taken to create an appliance for the headgear to attach to, typically an expander. Spacers will be placed one week before your child’s appointment so the appliance can be temporarily cemented. Your child's headgear is custom-fitted to ensure maximum comfort and effectiveness, guiding proper growth and development.
You will need to schedule regular visits to allow Dr. Callahan to monitor your child’s progress and make any required modifications to the treatment plan as necessary. Our goal is to guide your child’s growth and development toward a healthy and beautifully aligned smile.
