Latoya Callahan DDS
Dr. Latoya Callahan was approaching the end of her matriculation at Wayne State University in Michigan, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree with the intention of entering medical school, when she had a chance conversation with a family friend. He knew that, in addition to having a strong scientific background, Dr. Callahan was also artistic, creative, and dexterous. As a dentist himself, he highly recommended that she consider a career in dentistry, which combines health care, science, dexterity, creativity, and esthetics. The conversation was so compelling that Dr. Callahan decided to explore the idea further. Eventually, she applied to and was accepted by Howard University College of Dentistry.
During her time at Howard, she received a comprehensive education in all facets of dentistry, with a particular interest in orthodontics. After graduating, she moved to New York City, where she completed a general practice residency. In her second year, she served as Chief Resident, expanding her clinical skill set and deepening her knowledge. She then began her career as a general dental practitioner in a hospital-based setting, where she held several leadership roles, including serving as an attending for the residency program.
After practicing for several years, she decided it was time to pursue the area of dentistry that had captivated her early on—orthodontics. She completed a three-year orthodontic program at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center in Bronx, NY, where she again served as Chief Resident in her final year. This rigorous program provided her with extensive experience managing cases of varied complexity, including participation on craniofacial and orthognathic surgical teams. After graduating, she remained in New York City, practicing for several years before returning to the Washington, D.C., area—a place she had greatly enjoyed during dental school.
Dr. Callahan recognizes the significant impact orthodontic treatment can have on an individual’s self-esteem and confidence. The results are truly transformative. She believes that the relationship between the patient, the orthodontist, and the rest of the dental team should be a collaborative one—where the orthodontist carefully listens to the patient’s concerns, helping them navigate treatment options to arrive at the best plan for achieving their goals.
With over twenty years of experience in the dental field, she is committed to staying abreast of the latest technology, techniques, and research by regularly participating in continuing education courses. She is known for her warm chairside manner, attention to detail, and efficient, timely delivery of care. She values her patients' trust and always strives to treat each patient with the same care and consideration she would extend to a loved one.
When she is not creating beautiful, bespoke smiles, she enjoys traveling, home décor and design, fine dining experiences, creating fresh floral arrangements, watching movies, practicing meditation and mindfulness, or visiting the spa. Many of these activities are made even more enjoyable when shared with her right-hand man—her tween-aged son.
